Goals either side of half time were enough for Welling United to claim victory against Hungerford Town

It was a disappointing afternoon at Bulpit Lane as Hungerford couldn't take advantage of results elsewhere to move out the relegation zone. Ian Herring gave debuts to new signings Taofiq Olomowewe and Yan Klukowski. Reading loanee Akinwale Odimayo made his home debut whilst Zidan Akers came in from the start. Matt Berry-Hargreaves replaced Marcus Johnson-Schuster at right back.

Welling thought they’d made the perfect start through Adam Coombes’ far post header but it was ruled out for offside. Gavin McCallum was a constant danger man down the right hand side and his corner was met by a Wings player, only for the header to be cleared off the line. Bradley Goldberg came close to the opener but Adam Siviter saved well from the striker before the deadlock was finally broken on half time. A swift counter attack was smashed into the roof of the net by Danny Waldren. Hungerford were holding their own in the first half and getting into dangerous areas but the final ball was letting them down on too many occasions. Klukowski came closest to any goal for the hosts but Daniel Wilks had no serious saves to make.

The Wings dominance continued after the restart with Anthony Cook and Goldberg both forcing Siviter into further saves. Matt Jones came within a foot of an equaliser with a curling effort before Rob Swaine nearly made it two-nil at the other end. The second goal was to arrive for the visitors when Cook swept home Coombes’ cross. Conor Lynch provided fresh impetus when he came on shooting wide of a post with his first glance at goal. Lynch then got a late goal, courtesy of Wilks' mistake, to make the final minutes interesting but Welling held on for a deserved three points.

Hungerford now have two weeks to reflect on the defeat before heading to Dorking Wanderers on the 12th of October.
