Hungerford’s survival hopes were already over but Dorchester’s were finally extinguished after a goalless stalemate at Bulpit Lane — a match that rarely threatened to spark into life and ultimately reflected why both sides have struggled all season.
Dorchester carved out the clearest opening of the first half when Wayne Robinson burst through the middle, only to see his low strike thump against the post with the goalkeeper beaten. It was the one moment of genuine quality in an otherwise cagey opening spell.
The game’s most controversial incident came soon after. Hungerford midfielder Sam Francis was forced off following a high challenge from Charlie Wooding. The Dorchester man escaped with only a yellow card, much to the frustration of the home bench.
Hungerford nearly snatched the lead just before the interval when Thomas Conteh found space on the edge of the box, but his curling effort drifted narrowly wide of Gerard Benfield’s right-hand post.
The second half offered little improvement in tempo or quality. Josh Marcon came closest for the hosts, his rising drive seemingly destined for the top corner until Benfield produced a superb fingertip save. At the other end, George Chubinidze had a rare sight of goal but blazed over from a promising position.
As the minutes ticked away, both sides pushed without conviction, and the final whistle confirmed a result that suited neither. Dorchester’s fate was sealed and on this evidence, it was easy to see why both teams have endured such a difficult campaign.
