On a warm, bright afternoon at Bulpit Lane, Hungerford Town were made to settle for a point after a fiercely contested 1–1 draw with Sholing FC.
Charlie Austin made his long‑awaited return from injury, and the veteran striker wasted no time making an impact.
But the game’s first flashpoint arrived inside the opening minute. Thomas Conteh beat goalkeeper Jack Turner to a loose clearance and lofted the ball goalward, only for Turner to appear to handle outside the box as he pushed it away. Referee Josh Osofa waved away furious Hungerford appeals, leaving the home crowd stunned.
Moments later, Sholing gave Hungerford the breakthrough. A poor clearance from Sam Magri fell straight to Austin on the edge of the area, and he made no mistake — drilling a powerful finish beyond Turner to put the Crusaders ahead inside five minutes.
Austin’s afternoon was cut short on the half‑hour mark as he succumbed to a back problem. His replacement, Ewan Lynch, almost doubled the lead shortly after, firing into the side netting from a tight angle.
Deep into first‑half stoppage time — added largely due to Austin’s treatment — Sholing found a slice of luck. Tommy‑Lee Higgs’ speculative effort took a wicked deflection, wrong‑footing Luke Cairney and levelling the match at 1–1 heading into the break.
The second half descended into a scrappy, stop‑start affair. Michael Folivi came closest to putting Sholing in the lead, rattling the crossbar with a well‑struck free‑kick.
But the game swung on 68 minutes when George Smith received a second yellow card, leaving Hungerford to battle the final stages with ten men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Hungerford defended with grit and organisation, repelling waves of Sholing pressure. Cairney remained largely untroubled as the hosts held firm to secure a hard‑earned point.
Given the chances, the injuries, and the red card, a 1–1 draw felt a fair reflection of a match that never quite settled into rhythm but delivered plenty of drama.
