With surface water gathering rapidly and a fierce wind driving sheets of rain across the pitch, it was a minor triumph that the match went ahead at all. The Crusaders, unchanged from their gritty display at Wimborne three days earlier, had hoped the elements might tilt the contest in their favour. Instead, they were left stunned by a ruthless visiting side who adapted far better to the chaos.
Farnham struck first after 11 minutes, Evans diverting a Mason cross into the net after sustained early pressure. The match then descended into a frantic, end‑to‑end battle as both teams wrestled with the conditions. Hungerford grew into the contest, Louis McGrory almost scoring directly from a corner only for goalkeeper Eacott to claw the ball onto the underside of the bar. Their improvement was rewarded on 17 minutes when Thomas Conteh reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box to level. The young loanee was a constant menace, despite receiving little protection from the officials as Kinnane repeatedly tested his resilience.
By the midway point of the half, Hungerford appeared to be coping better with the swirling wind and standing water. Their pressure told on 26 minutes when a goalmouth scramble ended with Farnham’s Cooksley slicing the ball into his own net in farcical fashion. But the lead lasted barely two minutes. Evans struck again after a ricochet in the Hungerford area, and moments later the visitors were ahead, a Dean cross turned into his own net by the unfortunate Rhys Tyler. The remainder of the half was a blur of mis‑hit crosses, skidding clearances and frantic defending.
The second half began with the game still finely poised. Hungerford threatened from set pieces, Charlie Austin and Jerry Gyebi both going close, the latter denied by an excellent Eacott save just before the hour. But the match swung decisively on 70 minutes when McGrory was forced off with concussion following a heavy challenge. The disruption proved costly. Within moments, sloppy possession gifted Farnham the ball, Saunders feeding former Hungerford striker Liddle to make it 4–2.
What followed was a collapse that left home supporters stunned. With belief draining away, Hungerford were carved open repeatedly as Farnham added further goals from Dean, Leggett and Obi in the final quarter of an hour. The scoreline, scarcely believable in the conditions, reflected a visiting side determined to play football despite the weather—and a home team whose fragility was once again exposed.
For Hungerford, this was a sobering night. With Bracknell looming on Saturday, it is back to the drawing board for a side that must rediscover resilience before the season slips away.
