We looked fairly comfortable when we established a three goal lead early in the second half, but when Chesham reduced the arrears they sensed that another goal would turn the game around, and we had to fight hard for the last half-hour to hold on to the points, but did so to earn the victory which put us up to 6th. place, albeit having played more games than the teams around us,
We started well and took the lead after only 8 minutes when Stefan Brown reacted quickly to drive his shot past George Legg in the Chesham goal, but Paul Strudley collided with a fellow defender as he tried to clear and we had to scramble the ball away from danger. John Boardman was injured and hobbled painfully off, to be replaced by Mike Jones as we almost increased our lead, but a Chesham defender cleared Brown,s teasing cross. We made it 2-0 after 32 minutes when James Rusby’s cross caused a mix-up between Laurie Stewart and the goalkeeper, the ball eventually going in off Stewart in a crowded goalmouth, but Strudley had to make a good save to keep out an effort from Kelvin Bossman just before half-time.
A cross from Garyn Preen brought about a desperate tackle and Nat Jarvis scored easily from the resultant penalty after 52 minutes, but Chesham fought back well and earned several corners in quick succession, Bossman eventually heading home after 59 minutes to make it 3-1 and give the visitors a boost. Chesham now tried hard to get back into the game, but we defended stoutly, sometimes desperately, and our only attacks came from breakaways, but this was a 100% effort from everyone and we did not allow the visitors to get another goal which might have made for a tight finish.
