Having thrown away a two-goal lead in the last two games, it was important that we produced a solid defensive display, and we did just that, scoring a goal in each half and comfortably closing down any Biggleswade attacks to record our first league win of the season and climb away from the lower reaches of the league on a scorching day, which seemed like the hottest of the year.
The visitors had a difficult trip due to traffic congestion and did not arrive at the ground until after 2 o’clock, but we were without skipper Mark Draycott, who was starting a three match suspension.
Despite their late arrival the Waders started well , but Paul Strudley, back in goal after missing the last two games, was in good form and dealt confidently with anything that came his way, but Alan O’Brien soon began to use his pace down the wings to test the visitors defence and he created the opening goal, crossing for Nat Jarvis to head home after 23 minutes, but Matt Day was at full-stretch to head away a dangerous a counter=attack, although he was fouled in the process and we were able to clear th danger.
Playing down the slope after the interval,, we were almost caught out when centre-forward Tony Burnett broke clear, but his pass went astray and we cleared the danger safely, and we soon doubled our lead when James Rusby scored from close in following Matt Collins’ corner after 54 minutes. This was the moment when things had gone wrong in our two previous games, but this time there were no problems and we were able to deal comfortably with the few Biggleswade attacks, indeed it needed a marvellous save from Ian Brown to deny Jarvis, and he was lucky when he got in a muddle from a back-pas, but recovered to clear the danger.
Team; Strudley, Horgan, John, Boardman, Day,Rusby, Tyler( Stow ),Collins, Jarvis, Bossman(Brown), O’Brien( Clark) . Subs' Jones, Goodger.
The Southern League website records that we won 1-0, Rusby’s goal being missing. Hope it can be corrected as our “goals for” and goal difference” are incorrect.
