Walking Footballers from Hungerford and Thatcham play for PCUK

Andrew Robinson13 Mar - 22:51

Monday night's training was a bit different than usual and for a very good reason.

Sometimes sport is about more than just playing games.

On Monday night and fresh from success on our first competitive weekend, players from Hungerford Town and Thatcham Walking Football Clubs got together at John O’Gaunt school in Hungerford to play a mini tournament. This was prompted by the sad news that one of our friends from Thatcham has been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer and he is passionate about spreading awareness of the need for men of a certain age to get themselves tested for Prostate Cancer.

As well as raising awareness amongst the players we also threw contributions inti a bucket and raised over £550 for Prostate Cancer UK.

Scores were kept, but only because a generous sponsor donated additional money for each goal scored.

An enjoyable evening was had by all and we’d like to pass on the message that prostate cancer is likely to affect 1 in 8 men and is especially likely to affect those over 50. For men of colour the risk is higher from an earlier age. A simple blood test (PSA) can help identify if you are at risk.

You can find out more at https://www.prostate-cancer-research.org.uk - and there is a thirty second risk checking too on the site at https://prostatecanceruk.org/risk-checker
