A late winner from Ryan Jones secured the Crusaders place in the 3rd round of the FA Trophy in a tight cup tie in Devon

Hungerford who are two steps above the Devon side put on a rather dominate performance in the first half. Almost from the kick off Jake Evans found himself clean through on goal from a Callum Willmoth through ball but despite his shot beating the keeper it just clipped the top of the crossbar and went over. This was closely followed by a header by Dan Roberts that went just over after a cross by Evans.

Hungerford were really on the front foot and midway through the half Roberts forced Borthwick in the Tavistock goal into a great save and then Jerry Gyebi headed just over from the resulting corner. Indeed Evans’ corners were causing really problems for Tavistock but somehow the away side failed to score from them despite causing chaos in the area

Late in the half Simon Grant made a sharp stop from Josh Grant after he seemed to drift past a couple of Hungerford defenders. However it would have been a harsh goal to concede after a dominate first half performance from the crusaders

Early in the second half Grant again stopped a good Tavistock chance by getting his finger tips to the ball just before the home side’s striker. It was Hungerford though who had the ball in the back of the net from Gyebi soon after but it was disallowed after an apparent push on the keeper.

On 68 minutes Dan Roberts finally opened the scoring. After good hold up play and a ball in the box from Niko Muir, Roberts had a header that beat the defenders and keeper going into the far post. It took a slight deflection but in fairness it was a goal that Hungerford deserved.

After the opening goal the home side had to attack went on the front foot and found the equaliser with ten minutes to go a speculative effort by Harris managed to beat Grant from 30 yards and it seemed the game may go to penalties. As appeared to be the home side’s want.

Hungerford had other ideas, Evans got the ball down the left hand side of the box and found a pass to Roberts who slid the ball to Ryan Jones his powerful shot found the net. A moment of quality in a game that in the second half especially lacked in quality. A deserved winner from Jones in a tricky tie for the Crusaders. Also a second win in as many games for Danny Robinson’s side.
