Shrewton United FC - A Brief History

Shrewton United F.C. is based in the village of Shrewton, Wiltshire which is 3 miles away from the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge.
Football has been played in the village since the First World War with various fields being given over to the playing of matches.
Following the end of the Second World War a collection was made by the villagers to show their appreciation of all our local wartime heroes. The servicemen decided to buy the Recreation Ground offered to them by Mr Z. Stiles a local farmer, which is where Shrewton still play.
Shrewton United was formed in 1946 by two men, one who became our Club President, Mr John Withers and Mr Geoff Young.
Playing our football in the Wiltshire League, Shrewton won the Division Three title in 1977-78, 1978-79 and 1980-81.
1990-91 saw us runners up in the Division One title chase and again in 1992-93.
1996-97 brought us our first Division One title and 1998-99 & 2000-01 we were once again runners up in that League.
2001-02 and 2002-03 brought us the League title and the Knock Out Cup doubles which is when our application to join the Western League was accepted.
2003-04 brought us a very respectable seventh place finish in our first season in the Western League.
2007-08 is currently our best season in the League when we finished in fourth place.
Work at the Recreation Ground has been on-going since we joined the Western League with the re-building of our changing rooms and the installation of floodlights bringing the Club up to the current F.A. ground grading standard.
2010-11 Season saw Shrewton United attain FA Charter Standard Club status.
Famous players who have worn the Shrewton United shirt include two England stars.
In 1957 Roger Hunt who played for England during the successful 1966 World Cup campaign became a Shrewton United player.
He was posted to Larkhill Camp during his National Service and wanted to play for Shrewton, but at first he could only play in the 2nd team because we were only allowed 3 servicemen in any one side and we thought we had the best until we saw Roger play.
Another future England player who played for Shrewton while he was at school was Mick Channon. When he signed for Southampton they donated a pair of goal nets to the club.
Mick kindly accepted our offer to become our Club President at the start of the 2011-12 season.
2011-12 sees a new management team come in to look after the Western League side following the decision of Stuart Withers to step down to run our Wilts League side.
Steve Chalk and his assistant Graham Fisher join us from Wilts League outfit Chalke Valley FC with the aim of pushing us towards League honours.
