RIP - Sid Webb - A Tribute to a Hungerford Legend.

RIP - Sid Webb - A Tribute to a Hungerford Legend.

Martyn Leach13 Feb - 12:50

Everyone at Hungerford Town is deeply saddened to hear that former player, sponsor and supporter Sid Webb recently passed away at the age of 76...

The first mention of Sid in the club’s history books came in the 1965/66 season when aged just 16 years old he was part of the Hungerford team that beat Didcot Town 3-2 in the FA Amateur Cup. One of Sid’s teammates that day, and author of ‘The Story of Hungerford Town,’ Bob Edmonds, wrote:

“Sid Webb was always going to be a good footballer. I remember him as a boy of about 8 or 9 playing well against much older players”.

From that season onwards, with the exception of a couple of spells away from the club including a short spell at the then non-league giants Trowbridge Town, Sid was a permanent fixture in the Hungerford Town side. In terms of total appearance for the club, Sid is second only to Bob Ponsford having played over 650 games for Hungerford over 20 years. Sid is best remembered as a tough tackling full back, but he was so much more than that and also scored goals including one in the 1977 Berks & Bucks Senior Cup Final against Slough Town and goals in both the FA Cup and FA Vase.

Sid went on to play for the Reserve XI for many seasons before finally retiring and becoming a key sponsor and supporter of the club. Between 2017 and 2022, including the seasons affected by Covid-19, Sid and Chris (Budgie) Hall, affectionately known as "Kit & Kat", looked after the kit on match days for managers Ian Herring and Danny Robinson. Sid was also a member of the HTFC Tuesday Club, alongside his great friend Ray Mitchell, and rarely missed a game home or away.

Hungerford Town Football Club has a great deal to thank Sid Webb for, and we have lost yet another club legend, or to use Sid’s own words leg-end, who served and supported Hungerford Town for over 60 years. Many of us have also lost a personal friend. We send our sincere condolences to Sid’s wife Dee, his two boys Duncan and William, and all family and friends. May he rest in peace.

We will be holding a minute’s applause in memory of Sid prior to kick-off V Walton & Hersham on Saturday.
