I had an opportunity to speak with former Hungerford striker Charlie Austin today prior to his biggest game of his career on Saturday with Swindon Town.
Charlie has had what can only be described as a whirlwind 9 months. From Bricklayer to Professional footballer scoring 29 goals in 31 appearances in his first season to playing at Englands home stadium Wembley in the League one play off final against Milwall.
I asked Charlie what his and the teams preparation has been in the 12 day gap since their second leg play off game against Charlton.
"We had a couple of day's off to spend with the family and then back into training everyday."
"It is important to keep fit and practice, we will be training tomorrow morning then travelling up together then visiting Wembley in the Afternoon to take it all in."
I asked how he was feeling, and was he nervous?
"Of course I am nervous but at the same level I am looking forward to it, the whole team need to be focused on winning tomorrow so I can't let nerves get in the way, I want to do the best I can and so do the team."
"Every kids dream is to play at Wembley Stadium and now I have my chance and I intend to take it."
"This has been a whirlwind 9 months and when I first started I never thought that I would of come this far."
Presumably this is your biggest game of your career, but does anything else compare?
"No nothing compares but my debut at Norwich was mine and my family's proudest moment to date, but obviously as I already said this is a massive game for me and the club on Saturday."
There is said to be a lot of clubs chasing you especially Newcastle, are these just rumours or has there been any contact?
"No contact, they are just rumours, I am just concentrating on my football, I want to get the club into the Championship and continue my football with them."
And what are your aspirations for the next three to four years?
"Obviously like anyone I want to play at the highest level I can, whether that be for England or in the Premiership" If I can continue scoring goals and work hard then who knows where my career will take me."
All the best for Saturday's game and good luck in your career, thanks Charlie.
On behalf of Hungerford I wish Charlie all the best for the future but certainly for Saturdays huge fixture.
