Busy time in Management

Busy time in Management

Matt Robinson23 May 2010 - 07:59

After Hungerford's appointment of Bobby Wilkinson & Michael Gilkes, other teams in and around the area have also been very busy. See below for recent changes:

Slater Moves To Reading - 21st May
Reading Town have appointed Roddy Slater as their new manager. He takes over from Colin Millard, who quit last weekend, along with his assistants Glenn Goudie and Rob Wytchard. Several players have been talking about leaving, while influential defender Michael Buck has already been linked with a Southern League club.

Slater, 37, who recently left Henley Town after three years in charge, will be returning to Scours Lane, having been assistant to Millard back in the early 2000s. Slater’s management team will include Tommy Boylan and player Mark Bartley, plus one other yet to be named. “We will be looking to assemble a squad as soon as possible,” said Slater. “Colin did an excellent job there, but I will be looking to build on that. I will probably bring some of those who played with me at Henley, but I want to sign Reading (based) players either from a higher level or who are already in the Hellenic League.”

Town chairman Roland Ford said: “We are absolutely delighted to have Roddy back at the club. He was very positive when we interviewed him and is confident he can maintain the progress we made under Colin. “He knows he will be working with a small budget, as he was at Henley, but still believes he can get a strong squad together as we look to improve on this season.” Millard said: “We left because we feel that it would almost be impossible to improve on last season without investment into the playing squad. “Unfortunately, the club is not in a position to provide this.” Ford added: “Colin made it clear that he feels without a considerable increase in his budget that he can’t take the club any further. “With a few key players wanting to try to play at a much higher level, he feels he would not be able to attract replacements and improve the squad as he would like to do. “Nobody needs to be told how precarious finance in football currently is with many clubs at our level and above withdrawing their playing budgets last year due to the economic situation, which has affected sponsorship and income from functions. “It was a struggle to honour the agreement made with the manager at the start of the season and, with no easing of the financial situation in sight, we feel we cannot put the club at risk by doubling our budget for players. We would like to thank Colin for all his hard work over the years and wish him well in the future.”

Millard quashed rumours linking him with the manager's job at Abingdon United. Reading finished third in the Premier Division, falling away in the closing stages after being the leaders for much of the season. They also reached three cup finals, but suffered heavy defeats in the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy and A M Print and Copy Floodlit Cup finals before ending their season with a 4-1 win over Combined Counties League side Hanworth Villa to lift the Southern Combination Cup. It was still their most successful season ever, but then it could have been ever better.

"Lyner" Stands Down - 21st May
Witney United Football Club announce that they are on the lookout for a new manager after Andy Lyne resigned for personal reasons.

Lyne took over the role three seasons ago and has led the club to top four positions on two occasions and also to the last 32 of the FA Vase twice as well as two cup semi-finals. Last season was probably the most difficult season of Lyne's three year reign with the club feeling the effects of the economic situation and having to reduce the playing budget twice. Despite this he kept the playing squad together for the remainder of the season and finished in the top six. However work commitments mean that Lyne has chosen to step down from the role meaning that United will begin the search for their 6th manager since the club's formation.

Chairman Steve Lake said of Lyne's decision " Everybody involved with WUFC will be upset about Lyner's announcement, but we also respect the reasons behind his decision. Andy is Witney through and through, and probably always will be, so we all know how tough this was for him . He will certainly be a difficult act to follow but we all wish him well in whatever he goes on to".

Lyne, who will be joining Stuart Peace at Zamaretto Premier Division Didcot Town, commented "This has been a very difficult decision for me on many levels but after long deliberation I believe its in the best interests of all concerned. Quite simply I do not have the time to lead from the front and manage a club right now, as my work commitments are demanding. I love football though and wanted to stay in the game, thus the opportunity to go to Didcot Town as part of the management team was one I couldn’t refuse".

Witney United FC would like to put on record their thanks for the job Andy Lyne has done both on and off the field for the club during his three seasons and wish him all the best for the future.

An announcement will be made shortly about the 1st Team Manager vacancy at Witney United.

Changes At Wantage Town - 22nd May
Wantage Town Chairman Tony Woodward is pleased to announce the appointment of Andy (Chic) Wallbridge as the new Manager of Wantage Town for next season 2010/2011. Woodward is equally pleased to confirm the appointment of Ellis Langford as Assistant Manager. This follows the departure of former Manager Richie Bourne to Abingdon United.

Woodward stated: ‘"We recognised some time ago the management potential in Andy Wallbridge (left), and had no hesitation in offering him the job. Maintaining continuity and stability within a Club and a squad is very important. Chic’s enthusiasm for the role has already impressed. His experience and knowledge of the game, backed up by the equally experienced and motivational Ellis Langford (right), offers the Club an ideal opportunity to continue to progress. We have never been afraid to offer managers a start in management, as evidenced by the progress made by Stuart Peace, (who moved to Didcot Town, winning the FA Vase in 2006 and has taken them to the Southern League Premier Division), and now Richie Bourne. Chic and Ellis are a safe pair of hands-on managers, who will bring fresh ideas to a developing and improving squad. We all look forward to next season."

"We wish Richie Bourne all the best for his new appointment at Abingdon United. Richie leaves on the best of terms, and with our thanks for all the service he has given Wantage Town during the past years."

Abingdon United announce new first team manager

The club are pleased to announce that they have appointed Richie Bourne as there first team manager with immediate effect. Following a period of interviews and meetings, the 37 year old will take over the resigns from Andy Slater. Richie, who was born and still lives in Swindon, is vastly experienced player within the Southern League. Qualified FA coach in 2000, he entered Management in 2004 and comes from Wantage Town Football Club where he learnt his trade. Club Secretary John Blackmore, says that they were pleased with the response they received from applicants, following Andy stepping down, and it was felt that although Richie was less experienced than some of the other applicants his passion, ability and enthusiasm would shine through and would suit both the club and manager in moving forward.

Carvell Resigns At Marlow - 22nd May
Another Hellenic club is looking for a new manager as Marlow United’s manager Kevin Carvell announced his intention to stand down as first team manager at the clubs AGM.

Kevin has been a stalwart at the club for over 22 years commencing as a 16 year old player and taking over the manager’s role 12 years ago when injury forced a premature retirement. He guided the club to the Reading Premier and Senior league titles, appearing no less than five times at the Madjeski Stadium, eventually winning the Reading Senior Cup.

After guiding the club into the Hellenic League East it took only two seasons to see the club elevated to the Premier Division. Success again arrived with capturing the Floodlit Cup in a eventful final over Hungerford and a respectable mid table position. This past season the team struggled after a successful start to the campaign, only avoiding relegation by the slimmest of margins. With the future of the club not yet settled Kevin decided it was time to make way for a new manager. He said "I feel I have gone as far as I can with the club and with the uncertainty surrounding the future it is time for new blood to give the whole thing a boost. Marlow need to be playing in the town and with the possible ground share at Marlow FC not likely to materialise the club needs to re-evaluate its position. There is no doubt about it we have been punching above our weight for the past two seasons and this season it began to show. I shall be staying in football locally and would like to thank the players and committee for their tremendous support over the years, particularly Mr Marlow United 'Alan Turner' without whom none of success would have been possible"

Dyton Calls Time - 23rd May
Alan Dyton says he did not have the motivation to carry on as join boss of Hellenic League Premier Division club Shrivenham in the 2010/11 season.

The experienced campaigner re-joined the club at the start of the year to work alongside Mark Love at the helm, but has now stepped aside.

”I always went back on the understanding that it was until the end of the season and we would assess it from there,” explained Dyton. "I was hoping that in the games I was at the club, I would get a lot of enthusiasm back, but it was a struggle. It’s been well-publicised the way I felt about players’ unavailability, that hasn’t helped. And the results didn’t turn around as quickly as I felt they would.”

Having thought long and hard about how the last few months, Dyton felt his enjoyment levels had not been enough to drive him into another campaign.

“I don’t think what I’ve got out of the second half of the season has been sufficient to make me look forward to another season,” he said. “If I haven’t got a buzz about me then I think that’s the wrong attitude to take into a new season with the club. A year is a long time to commit and if you’re not into it now, what’s it going to be like if things go wrong?”

Meanwhile, Shrivenham have given their pitch at the Rec a complete facelift in preparation for the new season. The club have put up around £14,000 to replace their much-derided surface, with the work going ahead last week.

Chairman Robb Forty said: “We’ve been needing to address our pitch for some time but we’ve had to make lots of other improvements the FA have told us to make, like enclosing the ground and putting in new floodlights. We thought this year we would attack the pitch and that is what we’ve done. With the way it’s looking now, hopefully we’ll go from having one of the worst pitches in the Hellenic League to one of the best. Even without grass on it you can see it’s a vast improvement already. In the current climate the fact that we have done it is a credit to the club and the hard work of the committee to raise the money.”

Manager of Yattendon & Frilsham Vic Hauston has resigned and taken the vacany at Newbury Town also whilst Thatcham Town Manager Gary Ackling has moved upstairs to become General Football Manager his assistant Paul Hunt is to take the reigns.
