St Albans put in a poor display but still came away with all three points against Hungerford Town. Ian Herring stuck with the strike partnership of Conor Lynch and James Constable and the duo led the line well with the former's threat in behind causing problems for the St Albans defence all afternoon. Zidan Akers came in for Kofi Halliday whilst George Smith replaced Dan Bailey in midfield from the team that started on Wednesday.
The hosts started well and intricate passing play was rewarded with Conor Lynch slotting home under Dean Snedker. Matt Jones then saw a free tipped over the bar by Snedker as Hungerford searched for the second. Saints responded with lots of possession but Adam Siviter wasn’t called into action. The closest they came was a well worked corner routine ending in a Tom Bender shot being blocked in the penalty area.
The visitors then drew themselves level with Guiseppe Iaciofano tapping home after a scrappy long throw in fell to the striker in front of goal. With the wind in their sails James Kaloczi headed home a free kick into the corner of the net two minutes later. Hungerford then had a golden chance to equalise. Zidan Akers used his pace to good effect down the left hand side and found James Constable unmarked in the penalty area but he fired over. Joe Tomlinson came close with a curling effort and then the hosts gained a man advantage ten minutes from time when Dave Diedhou was sent off for a second bookable offence. The visitors defended resolutely, in a narrow formation, as the hosts threw everything at them and held on for the three points.
Hungerford's next National League South match comes at Dulwich Hamlet next Saturday, kick off is 3PM. In the meantime on Tuesday evening we host Wantage Town in a friendly, kick off is 7.30PM.
