Hungerford Academy showed real character to overcome Fleet Town 2-1 in the FA Youth Cup 1st qualifying round.

Hungerford entered the game with an incredibly young squad consisting of four U'18's, six U'17's and five U'16's due to injuries and illnesses picked up in the 3 days leading up to the game. It was always going to be tough and the game was played in real testing conditions on a firm but fast pitch due to the continual rain that fell throughout the game. Both teams struggled in the opening exchanges to come to grips with the conditions with lots of loose touches and misplaced passes. However, Fleet adjusted better and had the better of the game in the first half and took the lead after 25 minutes following a mistake from Louis Willis-Falkiner who allowed the wide man to get in behind him and his blocked shot was expertly dispatched from 20 yards into the roof of the helpless Tommy Rees's goal. It could have been 2 moments later but Rees somehow got a hand to a long range shot destined for the top corner and tipped it over. Fleet continued to press and clipped the outside of the post with another effort, Hungerford offered very little goal threat in response and were thankful for the half-time whistle.

A heated and heart felt team talk along with some wise words from first team manager Ian Herring seemed to inspire the young crusaders as they began to take control of the game. They controlled possession for long spells in the opening 15 minutes of the second half without threatening Fleets goal. The turning point came on 55 minutes when Hungerford won a free-kick 25 yards out which Josh Elms lined up and expertly curled low into the far corner to bring the teams level. Hungerford used this momentum and 5 minutes later took the lead when Elms was played in behind the Fleet defence and he cooly passed the ball across the keeper into the far corner. Hungerford had to defend a barrage of free-kicks and corners in the last 5 minutes which were bravely defended by Tommy Lucas and Abdul Shaw. Rees was called into action again late on when he sprung across his goal to deny Fleet what seemed a certain goal following a header from a deep free-kick. Hungerford held on to secure a place in the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup, they'll find out their opposition next week.
