A not so Jolly day out!
By Matt Robinson
Boro first win of 2018 saw the Crusaders 3-0 at half time
This is a day best forgotten as we were well-beaten by a Borough side, like us, fighting to get clear of the threat of relegation. We had a severely depleted squad for the game, it poured with rain all the way to the Sussex coast, continued throughout the game and most of the way home, whilst we failed to master the artificial pitch and were two goals down in the first twenty-odd minutes and never looked like salvaging anything from the game.
The Boro started well and soon had our defence under pressure as we failed to get a grip of the game, and the home side took the lead after only 11 minutes when Yemi Odubade’s shot was deflected off a defenders legs and left Marcus Beauchamp helpless. We showed little sign of breaking down the home defence and went 2-0 down after 26 minutes when a free-kick from Charlie Harris was headed in unchallenged by Gavin McCallum. Just before half-time Lloyd Dawes slotted in a third goal when a misplaced clearance saw him seize the ball and fire it back into the net.
There was no way back for us as the home side continued to have the better of the play and McCallum headed in number four after 54 minutes to leave facing a rout.
Although we had few alternatives on the bench, we made a couple of changes and Alex Fragata made a rare appearance from the subs bench to tap in a consolation goal after 76 minutes, but the game was already well beyond our reach and the home side were able to celebrate three valuable points .There could be no complaints about the result and we shall need the return of those injured players with tough games versus St Albans and Havant to come in the next two weeks. The visit of Wealdstone scheduled for February 24th, is another game to be re-arranged due to their involvement in the F.A.Trophy.
