We not only produced another solid performance and another clean sheet, but this time we also scored a goal in each half to secure the points and continue our good start to the season in front of a respectable crowd at Bulpit Lane.
A couple of early efforts from Archie Collins came to nothing for WSM before we appeared to have taken the lead after only ten minutes when a defender turned the ball into his own net from a free-kick but, after consulting his linesman, the referee disallowed the effort as Stephane Ngamvoulou was deemed to be in an offside position and had affected the goalkeeper's attempts to get to the ball. Shortly afterwards Lewis Ward made a good save and sent Stefan Brown away with a long ball but he was brought down and the free kick came to nothing. Luke Purnell in the WSM goal made a double save in a goalmouth scramble and when Louie Soares broke away he shot just past the post. However, we took the lead right on half-time when Callum Willmoth suddenly let fly and drove a terrific shot into the top corner of the net.
Playing down the slope after the interval, we had a let-off when Tristam Plummer shot across the face of the goal and earned a corner but we made it 2-0 after 52 minutes when Luke Williams drove a free-kick from near the corner of the penalty area low into the net and we always looked secure thereafter. The drizzle in our faces got heavier and heavier, making conditions very unpleasant and the pitch extremely slippery, but it did eventually let up and although Dayle Grubb hit the bar for the visitors in the final minutes we held on fairly comfortably until the final whistle.
