After a blip in March, during which we lost three home games and slipped down the league table, we have had a marvellous run of 5 successive victories, with five clean sheets, to ensure a play-off place, and are now in 2nd, place, although Redditch could go back above us if they defeat Chippenham tomorrow(Wednesday) This is a magnificent effort by any standards and no praise can be high enough for Bobby and his team, both on and off the pitch. Well done ! It is great to be involved.
Although Histon were already relegated ( a pity for a club with such excellent facilities which date back to their Conference days) although it is a difficult tourney to Cambridgrshire, especially on a Tuesday evening and their youthful side put up a great fight, especially in the first half, when they made it difficult for us to create any real chances, and the game was something of a stalemate even if the home side had some shots at goal themselves.
However, although the home side had a chance when Sam Ling volleyed well over the bar soon after the re-start, we took the lead after 57 minutes when Aaron Chapman saved well, but could not hold onto the ball, and it rebounded to Stefan Brown who promptly drove it back past him into the net. We always looked fairly safe thereafter and Brown broke away 5 minutes later to slot the ball into the net and give Chapman no chance. Although a 2-0 lead looked fairly secure, Paul Strudley had to pull off a fine save from Christian Owusu to keep his goal intact. Mike Jones had been limping for some time and he was replaced by James Rusby and Harry Goodger came on for Nat Jarvis. Chapman saved well, punching out Garyn Preen’s inswinging corner, but Goodger ran onto a through ball to make it 3-0 with a clinical finish.
The game was as good as over and the players celebrated briefly before facing that tedious journey home, satisfied with a job well done.
