After the rare occurrence of two successive defeats which had seen us drop out of a play-off place, it was important to get back to winning ways, and we did just that, scoring twice in the first half and coasting comfortably through the second half to retain 6th. place and climb to within a point of King’s Lynn.
A dry week and much work on the ground had overcome the conditions which caused the Slough postponement on Monday, although there was a biting easterly wind which chilled the rather sparse crowd, but the home supporters were soon warmed by a good start and an early goal.
We started well and Matt Day’s free-kick following a foul on Stefan Brown flew just wide and a dangerous cross from Alan O’Brien was cleared off the line before we opened the scoring after only 9 minutes, A great run down the left from Rhys Tyler ended with a perfect low cross which gave James Clark the easiest of chances to tap the ball in from close range. The visitors were forced to make a double substation midway through the half and we continued to dominate the game, Scott Rees creating the chance for Mark Draycott to make it 2-0 after 39 minutes.
With the slope in our favour after the interval we looked to be on course for an easy win, but we seemed content to play the ball around and retain possession, whilst the visitors raised their game and had plenty of the play. Their only real threat came from a couple of free-kicks from skipper Buster Harradine, but Paul Strudley dealt confidently with any threats from the City forward
We brought on all three of our subs during the half, but the game drifted away to a rather dull finish. The points were what mattered however, for there have been many unpredictable results this season, perhaps none more surprising that leaders Poole going down 3-0 at Cirencester that afternoon, with Chippenham now level with them on points. There is still some way to go and who would bet on the final positions. A play-off place is still there, although there aew sevreral hurdles to clear before the final whistle, perhaps the hardest to clear will be the long trip to King’s Lynn on Saturday
