This disciplined perfomance and well-deserved win was made even sweeter by the knowledge that the two clubs have met on five previous occasions and Dorchester had won them all, two F.A.Cup wins, a league double last season and a 3-2 victory at Bulpit Lane in August this year. On this occasion we more than matched them all over the park, with man-of-the-match Matt Day at his most commanding in defence, and yet he had time to get forward and score the only goal of the match with the home side hardly able to muster a chance.
It was the coldest day of the year so far,as the bitter northerly wind chilled us all, but the performance we produced warmed all our supporters even if they were heavily outnumbered in the 300-odd crowd of whom a fair number of the home fans started to drift away near the end.
Early concerns from both sets of spectators that the referee was from Weymouth, only a half-dozen miles down the road, did not matter once the game kicked off and Paul Strudley was easily able to shepherd the ball past the post from the Magpie’s first attack, and we soon began to put pressure on the home defence, James Clark putting over teasing corners from both wings, Alan Walker-Harris saving well from one of these efforts. The home side seldom got past our solid defence, with Matt Day and Jon Boardman in their usual commanding form. We continued to look the better side and when Clark ‘s free-kick from wide on the left had the home defenders struggling, Day was there to head powerfully into the net after 39 minutes to give us a deserved lead.
Lewis Morgan fired just past the post with a terrific 25-yard effort, but the home side could not create any real chances and resorted to some long-range efforts which were usually off target and Strudley was seldom troubled. Scott Rees got away, but screwed his cross behind and a Clark volley was deflected behind off a defender, with the defences usually on top, and we were never in danger as we saw the game out for a famous victory.
