Everything in the run up to this match pointed to a close game between two sides in good form, and so it proved, a draw being the predictable outcome. The Reds have been slowly climbing the le and a victory would have seen them go to the top of the table, whilst four successive wins have seen us in 5th position, with the exciting prospect of a home tie in the F.A. Trophy to come.
There were a few chances, but generally the two sides cancelled each other out in an enthralling game played in continuous rain throughout, while the final whistle saw both sides and their supporters content with the result.
We started well had had the better of the early play, but failed to profit from 4 corners in succession, each time the defenders able to cut out the danger. Ashley Sammons brought a food save from Paul Strudley after intercepting a misplaced clearance, whilst Alan O’Brien shot wide, but was offside in any case.and Sammons shot well wide with another effort as the game flowed from end to end.
With the slope in our favour after the interval, but the wind and rain in our faces, Nat Jarvis got his head to a good cross but flicked the ball wide, and the visitors survived another strong attack, but still game back to keep the spectators on tenterhooks and, although the two sets of defenders battled on sternly to keep the score-sheet blank, the visitors almost snatched victory right at the end when the ball was deflected off Matt Day to let Daniel Dubitat through, but Strudley got down well at the foot of the post to pull off a match-saving save. Honours were even, and few could complain about the result, the draw lifting the visitors to second place in the league, whilst we remained in 5th.p{lace.
