We came away pointless from our first visit to St.Ives, where the Lillywhites are now ground-sharing , to slip back to 9th. place in the league as our rather erratic form continued after that convincing win over Bedworth and the narrow cup win at Cirencester had put a stop to our long run without a win.
The long-heralded plans for a new ground still seem some way off and the home side have left their temporary home at Histon to move further away to the historic town of St.Ives , still within the county of Cambridgeshire , where the home side compete in the Southern League Division 1 Central .
Not surprisingly, there were wholesale changes from the side which we fielded at Cirencester, while Paul Strudley and James Rusby completed their suspensions, welcome news, but making future team selection even more difficult.
We started well, with Mark Draycott and Garyn Preen going close but were a goal down after only 17 minutes when , after two or three attempts to get the ball away, it fell to Alex Serrano who drove it first time into the top corner of the net. Shane Gore made a couple of saves as Cambridge tried hard to increase their lead, but no one was able to get a touch when Matt Colllins floated in a corner and Dean Stow’s effort lacked power and was saved by Zac Barrett as half-time approached and we went in a goal down.
Once more we made we made a poor start to the second half and Danny Kelly broke through to make it 2-0 within a minute or two. We began to put some pressure on the Cambridge defence, but Harry Goodger was unable to get in a clear shot in the crowded goalmouth and Rhys Tyler’s shot brought another good save from Barrett. However when Cambridge pushed forward they were awarded a free-kick which Kelly drove home after 66 minutes, to give the home side a 3-0 lead, the wall appearing to be badly positioned and Gore left helpless.
We did not give up and Dean Stow reduced the arrears after 75 minutes, and we might have brought the game even closer when Goodger appeared to get in the way of a goal-attempt from a colleague and the ball was cleared.
A goal then might have brought about a close finish, but the home side defended well and we were unable to find the net again, coming away pointless.
