To use an old cliché, “this was a game of two halves” for we were 2-0 up at halftime and looking fairly comfortable, but it all went wrong after the interval when Dorchester scored three times in the first 13 minutes to turn the game on its head.
It all started so well, with Matt Collins twice going close and Mark Draycott bringing a great save from Alan Walker-Harris, who finger-tipped his shot over the bar. Dorchester were giving few openings and it was no surprise when Nat Jarvis gave us the lead with a close range header from Draycott’s cross after 29minutes and went on to make it 2-0 after 42 minutes, again from Draycott’s pass. What a difference after half-time when Chris Dillon tapped in within 2 minutes of the re-start and suddenly our defence, the rock on which our recent successes was built, was all at sea, as Oakley Hanger had an easy chance to level the scores after 56 minutes and the Dorchester attack continued to pour forward. The Magpies third goal only 2 minutes later should have been disallowed as the ball ran well out of play, but the linesman stationed by the far corner flag had his view obstructed by the crowd of players in the goalmouth and could not be blamed, as Lewis Morgan scored from only a yard or two after a frantic melee in the goalmouth .
The vociferous Dorchester fans, who had been silenced by Hungerford’s first-half display, suddenly came alive and cheered on their team. The momentum had changed and despite a couple of good saves from the Dorchester keeper as James Clark and then Draycott, fired in good shots, we could not get back in the game, and it needed some good work by Dan Lincoln, standing in for Paul Strudley, to prevent the visitors.from increasing their lead, It was a disappointing result, to say the least., with a Monday trip to Redditch to come, followed by home games agiast second placed Biggleswade, and league leaders,Chippenham. There are tough times ahead.
