It needed a great deal of work on the pitch to ensure that it was fit after two recent postponements and the workers were rewarded with a solid professional performance as we turned the tables on the Terras, who won so easily at he Bob Lucas Stadium back in August, but who appear to have a “blip”, having led the table only a few weeks ago, but who have lost four of their last five games, with Poole now clear leaders again.
A Mark Draycott goal in the 9th.minute gave us the best possible start, and although we always had the edge, it needed an incredible save from Paul Strudley and a James Pilling (pictured) goal near the end before the points were in the bag and we could relax.
There was none of the complacency we showed at Banbury as we were on the attack right from the start and Alan O’Brien won a corner on the left, took the kick himself, and Draycott(who else) was there to knock a close range shot past Jason Matthews. Another O’Brien corner, this time from the right, put the visitors defence under more pressure, but they cleared the danger Strudley saved a Stuart Yetton shot but the visitors came close when Steve Colwell came up to power a header from a corner just past the post. There was a lengthy delay when James Pilling and Jamie Laird clashed heads but both continued after treatment and there were no further goals in the first half.
We had the advantage of the slope after the interval, but the usually reliable Yetton fired over the bar and Strudley pulled off an incredible one-handed save, although Draycott also had a chance but failed to get in a clear shot and as long as there was only a single goal between the sides, there was still all to play for. We continued to look the likely winners and were unlucky when Pilling rattled the bar with a fierce shot which left the goalkeeper helpless and it was Pilling who eventually made sure of the points when he broke through the defence and drove the ball hard and low past Matthews to make victory certain.
It had been a great effort from everyone.
