Harry makes Chesham pay the penalty

We tightened our grip on a play-off place by defeating Chesham United, thanks to two second-half penalties from Harry Goodger, as we again produced a solid performance which kept us in fourth place,with Weymouth suffering another defeat and St.Neots drawing at Dorchester . Corby are still top, despite losing at Truro, with Poole four points behind with two games in hand, whilst Truro are assured of at least third place and we seem destined to face a difficult away game to one of the top three teams in the play-offs.
This was a hard-fought game with little between the two sides in the first half in which the pace of Alan O’Brien always posed a threat to the Chesham defence, and we also went close following a long throw from James Rusby, the ball hitting the post off a defender, but the corner was cleared. It was not all one way traffic however and Paul Strudley was forced to pull off a good save from Dave Pearce and was in action again right on the interval with another save from Chesham’s quick breakaway to keep the score-sheet blank.
Charlie Mpi and Harry Goodger came on soon after the restart, but it was O’Brien’s pace which turned the game when he burst down the left and was brought down by Robbie Cundy. With regular penalty-taker Mark Draycott already subbed, Goodger stepped up and simply blasted the ball past Shane Gore after 67 minutes. Another quick break by O’Brien brought another penalty when he was pulled back by Ashley Smith for Goodger to repeat his earlier effort from the penalty spot after 84 minutes and make the game absolutely safe and complete a crucial victory.
