This was an excellent performance which not only took us back into the play-offs, but we also climbed to 4th. place in the league, thanks to the fact that Weymouth lost 2-0 at Truro , whilst St. Neots could only draw 3-3 at home to Dunstable. However, Weymouth are level on points with a game in hand, although with an inferior goal difference, and St.Neots are only a point behind, and one would be brave (or foolish) to forecast the final positions. Every game remains vital and extra support for those last 3 games of the season might make all the difference.
It was a perfect sunny spring day for the visit of Slough , and a sizeable crowd had good value for money as two evenly –matched sides fought hard throughout, before Harry Goodger’s late goal made sure of the points after James Clark had given us the lead early in the second half
The first half was fairly even and neither side could establish superiority, although Alan O’Brien’s pace down the wings always looked threatening even if we could not make a break-through, whilst a free-kick from Ryan Parsons looked dangerous, but was cleared confidently, Dean Stow got clear but his cross was far too strong and ran out of play on the other wing. Matt Collins took a number of free-kicks, but we were unable to profit and the first half ended goalless.
We had the advantage of the slope in the second half and took the lead within 10 minutes of the re-start when a long ball down the middle from Matt Day was seized on by James Clark who knocked it past the exposed Luke Williams. A shot on the turn by Mark Draycott almost deceived Williams, but he reacted quickly and saved comfortably. Although we were seldom threatened by the Slough attack, a single goal lead was not enough to make the game safe, but two subs combined to get that second goal near the end. Charlie Mpi controlled a through ball and Harry Goodger was there to tap in a seond goal which made victory certain.
