Our play-off hopes had a set-back when a battling performance by lowly Biggleswade held is to a one-all draw, and although St.Neots gained further ground by a 1-0 win at Cambridge , the damage was limited by the fact that Cirencester, Corby, Redditch, Truro , and Weymouth , all drew, whilst Chesham’s home defeat by Chipenham has virtually ruled them out of the play-offs. We remain in 6th. place, but every game is now vital and any points dropped in our last 5 games of the season might rule us out of a play-off position….
Playing conditions were extremely difficult due to the rain driven along by a strong wind which was in our face in the first half, and the Waders came out of the blocks with a determination which put us under pressure right away and it was no surprise when Lee Allinson, who had a splendid game in midfield, scored with a 20 –yard shot which gave Paul Strudley no chance, and, boosted by this goal, the visitors took advantage of the conditions to give us a testing time. However, we began to get a grip of the game and equalized after 23 minutes when Scott Rees scored after a break down the wing by Alan O,Brien and Mark Draycott headed against the underside of the bar and then brought a great save from Ian Brown as we finished the first half on top.
We played up the slope in the second half as things brightened up, with the strong wind now in our favour, but despite bringing on all three subs, the visitors continued to put up a strong battle which belied their league position and, although Charlie Mpi’s header brought a great finger-tip save from Brown, who flicked the ball over the bar we were unable to get that vital goal and the Waders deserved a point for their efforts which boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation.
