Report by Ron Tarry

So it was another long trip to Histon, only 2 weeks after our previous visit, this time to meet Cambridge City who are ground sharing there with Histon. The end of this arrangement is now in sight if still some way off, for we were shown drawings of their new ground at Sawston, south of the city, where work has already started on the 35 acre site, part of which has been donated to the Sawston parish council for recreational use.
Congratulations are due to their president Len Satchell who has made this all possible and, three years after they lost their Milton Road ground, a new era is in sight for the club. I am sure that we shall hear a great deal of the club in the years to come.
Back to the football however, with Matt Day unfit and suspended in any case, it was good to see Jon Boardman back in action, but our resources are severely stretched at the moment and our much-changed team came back well from a 2-0 deficit at the interval to boss the second half and were unlucky not to salvage a point. There is a short respite however, for the Red Insure tie is now scheduled for November 25th subject to a Wantage appeal, and it has not been possible to rearrange a league game for next Saturday, our original opponents St Neots Town being involved in the F. A. Trophy.
Our next game is therefore the Berks & Bucks Senior cup fixture with Maidenhead United on Tuesday November 18th.
We were set to play with the wind and rain behind us, but the rain soon died out, although the wind continued throughout the game, but the home side looked the more dangerous from the start and took the lead after only 8minutes when Ieuan Lewis cut in trom the right and gave Andrew Phillips the chance to drive the ball home. Alan O’Brien created a chance for Mark Draycott, but he was unable to find the target, nor was Harry Goodger as he headed wide from another O’Brien cross. After 32 minutes a Lewis pass gave Chris Bacon the chance to make it 2-0 with the outlook now looking bleak for us, although we responded well to this set-back.
A sudden storm early in the second half which blew teeming rain in our faces made things very difficult, but we stood up well to the horrendous conditions and reduced the arrears 10 minutes after the restart when James Clark volleyed home to put us right back in the game before the home side were lucky not to be penalized when Smith was brought down. However, defender Claude Vilcu was given a straight red card for a kick on Clark and we dominated the closing minutes, Smith missing with a long shot and Draycott heading wide with another chance, but we just could not get that vital goal and our poor away record continued with another defeat as we slipped down another place in the league.
