Although we held on to 8th.place in the league, we lost ground to clubs around us after this disappointing result at Histon as the home side followed up their 3-0 victory over Biggleswade to win by two late goals and climb off the bottom. Our run of poor away results thus continued and is a matter of concern as several clubs with games in hand could now push us further down the league.
It was a bright sunny day at Histon, although there was a strong wind in our faces in the first half. We gained two early corners but they were both played short and easily defended. Charlie Mpi got on the end of a good cross but the ball flew wide but neither side looked particularly dangerous until Scott Rees (pictured) seized a loose ball after some poor defending by the home side and neatly slid the ball past Denzel Gerrar 5 minutes before the break.
We looked the better side in the second half most of the danger coming from Lee Smith and Alan O’Brien down the wings, but failed to turn our possession into goals. Smith twice got clear on the left and was unlucky when his cross was turned behind off a defender, whilst O’Brien cut inside his marker but shot over the bar from close in, but that second goal which might have been decisive continued to elude us. Jon Boardman was also unlucky when he headed against the post but even with all three subs on that goal would just not come and Histon, with only a goal in it were still in the game.
The game turned in the 77th. minute when Histon earned a corner and centre-back Stuart Wall came up to head the equalizer. The home side were now in with a chance, which they seized in the last minute when Matt Day slipped as he tried to clear and Nick Freeman was there to knock the ball past Paul Strudley.
It was a bitter blow, but worse was to come when a defender tried to prevent Day from taking a quick throw, Day pushed him away and was sent off, to end the afternoon on a low note for the visitors.
