There was little between the two sides in what has become the usual pattern between us, but we were never able to put enough pressure on the home defence nor create any real chances so that the only goal early in the second half was enough to give the home side the points. It kept them at the top of the league, indeed their position was strengthened by St.Neots’ home defeat by Chesham, whilst we slipped down to 8th. place.
A strong wind made conditions difficult for both sides, and although it was in our favour in the first half, getting the right weight on the pass was not easy and we were unable to threaten Nick Hutchins in the Poole goal, although Paul Strudley too, had a fairly comfortable time at the other end. Poole, however, give little away and appear able to grind out results without dominating their opponents, and it looked likely to be a low-scoring game right from the start.
The vital goal came just before the hour when, from a free-kick wide on the right, the ball was lofted in for Keith Emmerson to head past Strudley, and although we built up a good deal of pressure in the closing minutes and gained two or three corners, the home defence stood firm and were able to hold on fairly comfortably until the end. Only one point from our last three games has seen us drop out of the race for a play-off place, although even playing at this level is something extraordinary for as club of our size and support.
