This was an excellent performance, our best of the season so far, as Corby, lying third in the league were well beaten, as after opening the scoring after only10 minutes, we were always in control and might have won by a bigger margin.
Paul Walker in the Corby goal was soon in action, punching away a dangerous cross, and when Charlie Mpi burst through the middle running on to a pass from Matt Day, Walker raced off his line and brought down the Hungerford striker for Mark Draycott to score with his usual immaculate penalty. There might have been another goal when Draycott fired over from a shot which came back to him off the bar, Corby’s attacks were few and far between and we were never in danger before making t 2-0 after 27 minutes. Diak John broke down the wing and his diagonal pass was met by Lee Smith, who scored with a spectacular volley which gave the keeper no chance. Mpi and James Clark had further chances, the latter shooting over the bar from point-blank range but half-time came with no further goals but with Hungerford well in control.
We made it 3-0 10 minutes after the re-start as Mpi powered down the right and sent over a hard-low cross which was knocked in by the alert Draycott. Smith hit the post but a corner from Cleveland Taylor flew across the face of the goal with no one able to get a touch
We remained in control, even when John limped off and was replaced by James Rusby, whilst Mpi had a standing ovation as he was replaced by Harry Goodger near the end but there was still time for Goodger to miss a “sitter” in the last minute, but the game had long been won.
