After we had established a two-goal lead and looked well in control, Burnham were awarded a penalty right on half time which gave them a lifeline, and they went close on several occasions as they had the better if the second half, finally equalizing in the last minute, a disappointing outcome after Saturday’s defeat of the league leaders, Cambridge City.
Heavy rain before the kick-off which persisted throughout the game did not help ,but the pitch stood up well and there were no problems. Although Matt Day defended well to cut out a Burnham attack we looked the much more dangerous side and soon had the home defence under pressure, eventually taking the lead after 18 minutes when Lee Smith got clear on the right and James Clark got on the end of his hard low cross to slide the ball home. It was soon 2-0 when Charles Mpi sent Mark Draycott through and he finished off the move confidently. Mpi got wide and turned the ball inside but there was no attacker there to finish the move. With 45 minutes almost up Day at best obstructed Nicke Kabamba as the ball ran through, but the referee pointed to the spot and Nathan Poulton converted the spot-kick to give the score-line an unrealistic look.
The second half was a different story, for the home side realized that they were in with a chance and had much the better of the play and although Smith shot just wide, Burnham were unlucky when Kabamba’s fierce shot hit the underside of the bar and rebounded clear. Paul Strudley saved his side with a good close-range save as the home side pushed forward constantly, eventually being rewarded in the last minute when we failed to clear Brad Hewitt’s free-kick and Jordan Alanlekoko scored from close range to earn his side a point.
