Although this was a wet and miserable day and the rain teemed down for most of the game, the pitch posed no real problems, even if it was rather slick and slippery, and we produced an excellent performance to earn a place in the F.A.Trophy 3rd. Qualifying Round.
We had an early chance when James Clark gained possession on the edge of the area, but he was robbed by defenders as he tried to line up his shot, whilst Paul Strudley saved easily when Mat Mitchell-King got in a header, although he sliced the ball out of play following a back-pass. We looked the better side, albeit with a strong wind behind us and Garyn Preen was prominent in most of our attacks, but the first half was goalless.
After the interval Paul Strudley saved well after a long throw from Tom Ward had our defence struggling although Preen shot wide he soon made amends with a shot inside the far post from another attack after 55 minutes. To give us the lead. The Saints came back strongly and had their best spell of the game, gaining a number of corners, and it was from a Isaac Galliford corner that Jon Boardman deflected the ball in to level the scores after 64 minutes.
The game turned on a substitution when Mark Draycott’s first touch sent Stefan Brown away to score a fine opportunist goal after 77 minutes and this time there was no way back for the home side and we were able to celebrate a job well done.
