The Indian summer which we have been enjoying ended abruptly as the rains came. They continued during the day and throughout the match so that, not surprisingly, the attendance was rather sparse for this county cup match as we again went down to defeat after taking the lead.
We started well and Rhys Tyler had already gone close when Stefan Brown rifled a shot into the roof of the net from the corner of the penalty area after only 14 minutes, but we had a set-back when Diak John, who had completed the 90 minutes on Saturday was again forced off through injury, Dean Stow replacing him. We still looked the more dangerous of the two sides, but allowed Ryan O’Toole in for the equaliser 2 minutes before the interval.
Worse was to come, for we failed to match Aylesbury’s enthusiasm out of the blocks at the start of the second half and Ken Feyi them the lead only 2 minutes after the restart and we were always fighting an uphill battle against a confident visitors side thereafter. We brought on Harry Goodger and James Clark to freshen up the attack but could still not break through.
However, with time running out, we pushed more players forward in an attempt to save he game, but Goodger hit the bar from only a yard or two when it looked easier to score, and we rained in three or four shots in from close range in quick succession, but somehow keeper James Weatherill and his fellow defenders kept the ball out. An equaliser looked inevitable, but the visitors survived and broke away to earn a corner, which was deftly headed in by Aston Goss with only 5 minutes left to make sure of victory and send miserably home those of our fans who had braved the elements to support their team.
