History

In the year 1882 the first recorded club was established in the town, the members meeting for practice in a field near to the Station Hotel. The promoters gave the name of “SWIFTS” to the club, the strip being dark blue jerseys, with a white swallow on the chest, and white knickerbockers. After practising for a considerable time near the Station Hotel, the club moved to Bewdley Road near the New Inn, where the first matches were played.

The Swifts changed their ground several times before in 1906 moving to Olive Grove. The 1912-13 season saw the team capture their first honours, winning both the Worcester and Bromsgrove Charity Cups. Just before the outbreak of World War 1 the Swifts reached their first County Cup Final, but were beaten 3-1 by the then powerful Badsey Rangers. After the war the Swifts came back with a vengeance and between 1925 and 1927 produced an historic hat trick of County Cup wins. Twenty years passed before Swifts lifted the trophy again, and after another 35 years, in 1982, they reached the final again but lost 2-0 to Metal Box.

During this time Swifts moved to their present ground at the Walshes Meadow. The 1970-71 season saw the return of Stourport Swifts to the First Division of the Worcester League after an absence of many years.
In 1979, after eight seasons in the Worcester League, the Swifts were elected to Division Two of the West Midlands (Regional) League. After consolidating their position for half a dozen years, in 1986 they gained promotion to Division One, after finishing fourth in the league.

The Swifts first season in Division One saw them come last but one, just avoiding relegation, but the following campaign saw them finish runners-up to Rocester and earn promotion to the Premier Division.
After a struggle in the initial seasons, the Swifts have gradually improved each year, and in the 1991-92 season they finished third after heading the division for most of the season. 1992-93 saw them win the Premier Division Cup and the Worcestershire Senior Urn.

1993-94 was another successful season with the Swifts pulling off a Cup double, again winning the Worcestershire Senior Urn as well as the Worcester Infirmary Cup beating Bromsgrove Rovers on both occasions. Despite the club finishing runners-up in the Premier Division of the West Midlands (Regional) League they failed to get elected to the newly formed Midlands Football Alliance.

In 1994-95 Swifts finished third and successfully defended both the Worcestershire Senior Urn and Worcester Infirmary Cup.

1995-96 saw them finish fifth in the league whilst retaining the Worcester Infirmary Cup.

In 1996-97 they again finished runners-up in the Premier Division, but 1997-98 was probably their best season in their 166-year history when, after finishing runners-up for the third time, they gained promotion into the Midlands Football Alliance. To this they added the Worcester Senior Urn and the Worcester Infirmary Cup.

The season 1998-99 was looked upon as a stabilising year, with the intention of retaining their league status the Swifts finished mid-table.

1999-2000 saw the Swifts contending for a promotional position, constantly near the top of the table, but thirteen drawn matches meant they never really challenged for the title, and a disappointing finale saw them finish in 6th position. On the Cup front, Swifts made it to the 3rd round of the FA Vase losing away at Berkhamstead 2-0. They fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup after drawing away at Belper, the replay was lost 2-1. In the County scene the Senior Urn final was reached however defeat was met in a penalty shoot-out with Malvern Town.

2000-2001 was Swifts most successful season, under the guidance of Rod Brown and Gary Wilde Swifts became champions of the Midland Football Alliance. The amazing fact of this was they were never top of the league until the ultimate match of the season when they won away at Bloxwich Town. This saw them join the Southern Football League for the first time, it was also their initiation into the FA Trophy where they were drawn away to Chester City, a tie that was lost after a replay.
