Austin hails 'massive' Easter weekend

CHARLIE Austin hailed Town’s double Easter victory as a “massive” achievement, but urged his teammates not to take their foot off the League One promotion pedal.

Saturday’s huge 3-0 win away at Leeds was followed up by the same scoreline yesterday as Tranmere were put to the sword at the County Ground, keeping Swindon in the second automatic promotion place.

But Austin, who struck his 18th goal of the season against Rovers, is refusing to think too much about what could happen at the end of campaign.

“It was massive. Just look at where it puts us in the table,” he told the Advertiser about Town’s back-to-back victories.

“If we didn’t win today (Monday) then Saturday meant absolutely nothing.

“We knew how Tranmere were going to set out against us but we controlled the game and got the result and three points, which was the main thing.

“But it means nothing at the moment. There’s still six games to go and we’ve got to win those to get promotion.

“We’ve just got to keep going, day after day in training, game after game and continue to work hard.

“We’ve got a big game coming up this weekend against Colchester and we’re not getting carried away. We know we’ve got to go there and try to get another three points.”

The front man was at the centre of controversy midway through the first half when Terry Gornell was sent off for kicking out at the striker.

Few people in the County Ground saw the offence apart from linesman Matt Foley, and Austin insists the straight red card was the correct punishment.

“I went and stood in front of the goalie and the guy came up and was pushing me, and the next thing I know he’s kicked me from behind and put his studs down the back of my calf,” explained the 20-year-old.

“The linesman’s seen it, but nine times out of 10 they don’t see stuff like that.

“Normally as strikers we moan about the referees protecting keepers and defenders too much, but luckily this time the linesman’s seen it and done his job.”
